We got up pretty late this morning because we really didn't know what we would be doing. And one of the guests from the BBQ was still here with her 2 year old. We eventually decided to go out to Christine's family's cabin on one of the islands in the archipelago off Stockholm. It's about a 1.5 hour drive to the island of Blidö (pronounced bleeduh with the accent on the "d"), which means mild, and it was. The drive is quite nice with lots of farms, ranches, and countryside the whole way. You never really feel like you are at the coast at all, even when you are island hopping. It felt a lot more like going through the San Juan islands near Seattle than anyplace else I can think of. We were going to visit Christine's father, Rune, at his cabin on the island of Blidö. The cabin is very nice and comfortable. Rune (pronounced rooney) likes to tinker and putter all time so everything is in good working order. I think it's kind of a retired man's boys club since Christine and the rest of the females in the family don't go there too much. But I may be wrong... The first thing we did was have some lunch. Rune was grilling some sausages in the fireplace, but was having some trouble with it. Only a couple had that crunchy taste with all the ashes from escaping the grill. We also had some smoked herring which was really good. And we got to try some Elderberry flower based drink that was also very different but very good. After lunch we headed out in the boat to do some fishing. In the water near the cabin which is a kind of inlet from the Baltic Sea, you can catch Pike. Out in the Baltic itself you can catch herring. Rune's boat comes equipped with sonar so you can find fish really easily. And Rune has been fishing these waters for 25 years, so he knows where to go. Caroline gave up on the fishing pretty quickly . It's not really her thing. And since there were only two rods, we were somewhat limited in that department. Christine and I did most of the fishing. And Christine was the only one that caught any fish. Even the old master Rune tried a bit, but we couldn't seem to coax more than one fish out of the water. We headed back before it started to rain again. And on the way, since the weather was holding, we went through this passageway to see herons and swans. We couldn't recognize the herons, but the swans looked like Trumpeter Swans from a distance, but they could be something else. Here is the Viking Princess with her fish. It's a real monster as you can see. For our final supper in Sweden Christine decided to make us her very own Swedish Paella. For those of you that don't know, Paella is a Spanish dish that has a seasoned rice base and then includes lot of shellfish, all things that Caroline and I love. I think that Christine took it to heart when I told her that in my distant past Caroline once made me a Paella and it was delicious. My birthday is 6/11. Caroline and Christine started plotting things for my birthday. I think the Paella was the first step... Thus we finished another great Swedish day. We took off our sunglasses at about 9:00 PM, had dinner at about 11:00 PM, and fell asleep well after midnight. It's too bad we are leaving tomorrow. We've had a great time. |
